In the agricultural flush lands of Ramgarh, Jharkhand, the adoption of modern tools and sustainable practices is rewriting age-old farming narratives. Farmers like Kishore Mahato and Triloki Mahato are witnessing a profound transformation in their livelihoods and their land. “Earlier, we used to spray medicines with a broom, covering barely 10 decimals in an hour. With the spray machine, I now cover an acre at the same time,” shares Kishore Mahato. From spray machines to Cono Weeders, the introduction of innovative tools is not only saving time but also enhancing productivity. Triloki Mahato highlights, “The solar pump has been a game-changer. Unlike the unreliable electricity or unavailable oil machines, I can now irrigate whenever needed.” Access to consistent irrigation has turned farming into a year-round opportunity, safeguarding crops and ensuring timely harvests. On a collective 15 acres of land, 12–15 farmers cultivate a variety of crops, including potatoes, broccoli, and coriander. Annual savings have skyrocketed from ₹30,000–₹40,000 to nearly ₹1,00,000. For generations, betel leaf farming has been a way of life in Baliapal, Odisha. But rising costs and low returns made it harder for families to sustain this tradition. “We used to earn a profit of just 5%. Now, it's up to 20%,” says Ranjan Majhi from Chaumukh, Baliapal. What changed? Support came in the form of organic farming practices introduced through Tata Steel Foundation’s agricultural initiatives. With better-quality yields, reduced input costs, and higher market value, the results have started to speak for themselves. “Earlier, our leaves were smaller. But with organic inputs, our quality and income have improved,” adds Jaganath Dinda, a betel farmer from Dagra. “Now that I am earning more, I am able to educate my children, and everything is going well.” This isn’t just about profit, it’s about restoring confidence in traditional livelihoods and opening new doors for the next generation.
